Chapter 9
Life at Rosewood settled into a comfortable routine. Belle found herself looking forward to the dance lessons with Sebastian. His touch and movements had grown so familiar that she was becoming proficient at the waltz, so much so that Sebastian was starting to teach her the fox trot. Never in a million years would she have thought she would enjoy dancing so much. The tension between them was mounting to a frenzied state, and she was starting to have dreams about him againâpassionate, swirling dreams that left her feeling restless and very guilty. Then again, she couldnât very well punish herself for having dreams, could she?
The days were passing quickly, and she was starting to dread when her time here would come to an end. It was as though she were in another worldâa world that she was growing quite fond of.
Peter kept pressing her to give him details on how the deal was progressing, wanting to know if sheâd been able to convince Sebastian to sell. She kept sidestepping the subject, and she could sense that he was getting frustrated at her evasiveness. The truth was that she didnât think that Sebastian had come a single step closer to seeing things her way, but she was starting to reconsider her stance. Rosewood had a lot more to offer than she first realized.
Surprisingly, she was learning a great deal from Alastair. She was coming to appreciate his dry British humor and keen wit. He was teaching her how to make scones, although it would probably take a lifetime to perfect the technique. Also, heâd taught her how to set a proper table, the ins and outs of hosting a successful dinner party, and a slew of other valuable tips on etiquette. Peter would be so pleased because she now knew how to make their engagement party a smashing success.
By the time the second week rolled around, the pace at Rosewood had gone from a steady hum to an energetic buzz as preparations for the masquerade party continued to go forward. A crew was called in to clean the mansion from top to bottom, and to polish the dance floor in the ballroom until it was so shiny Belle could see her reflection in it. Blaire was coming on a daily basis on the guise of ensuring that everything was being done to her liking, but Belle figured it was an excuse to see Sebastian. The thought of that horrid woman getting her claws into Sebastian was driving her to distraction. She wondered if she should warn him about her, but then decided that sheâd better keep her mouth shut. Otherwise, she would come across as being jealous.
She was in the ballroom, practicing some of the new fox trot moves, when the devil herself entered the room. Belle didnât see her at first, but rather felt someone watching her. Blaire tromped up to her in her fire engine red stilettos. âPracticing for the party, I see.â There was a bite in her voice.
